TMD Prevalence

It is estimated that 40% to 75% of the population has at least one sign of a TMJ disorder and 33% of the population has reported at least one symptom related to a TMJ disorder. This comes from the Guidelines of the AmericanAcademy of Orofacial Pain. It should be noted that these estimates vary depending on the study.

It is interesting that only 5% to 10% of adults with a TMJ disorder require treatment. An even lower percentage has debilitating or chronic symptoms.

Women are 1.5 to 2 times more likely than men to have this disorder. It is experienced mostly by women between the ages of 20 and 40 and pain mostly begins after puberty.
